Why not take a canal hire boat holiday?

I am aware that there are readers of this blog who do not own their own narrowboat, or have never hired one for a holiday. There are also readers from outside the UK who don't realize what a holiday on the British Canals could be like, or how they would go about actually doing it. Here I will hopefully get you interested.....
Whether you are a UK resident, or contemplating visiting the UK from abroad, you are obviously reading this because you hold some sort of interest in canals. If you are not lucky enough to own your own boat just yet, or have never had a canal holiday on a hire boat, why not give it a try. You will see this country in a completely different light to any other type of holiday. If you are worried that you have no experience of boating, don't worry, as all hire companies give you instruction on how to use the boat, and how to use the canals, such as locks and basic navigation rules of the road. You may not be aware that there are 2000 miles of canals to explore, and you will travel at a pace that is completely unhurried, and will allow all your stresses of work and every day life to evaporate.

This is our boat, but you can hire one just like it.

This is not the kind of holiday that is too affected by the often inclement British weather. If it rains at the coast, it isn't pleasant, as there is nothing else to do other than sit on the beach. On a canal boat holiday, you just get on with it come rain or shine, with plenty to interest you on the way. You can chose to travel through industrial landscapes if you are interested in history, or keep it rural if nature is your thing. Whatever you chose, you will travel through Britain in a landscape that hasn't changed much in 200 years.

You can plan your journey to include overnight stops right outside pubs and restaurants if you wish...

There are many hire boat companies throughout the canal system, so it is just a matter of deciding which part of the UK you wish to see, and how long you want to spend doing it. You can hire for just the day if you wish. If you don't fancy crewing your own boat, why not consider a fully crewed hotel boat holiday. With these you can choose how much you want to get involved, by helping with locks, or just sitting back to relax and enjoy the scenery. There is information here about hotel boat cruising .
Here are some general canal photographs to whet your appetite.....
Don't worry about locks, you will soon get the hang of them.
Visit historic towns, this is in Nantwich.
 Meet interesting characters!
This is a world heritage site, give it a go, it's on The Llangollen Canal.
Pets are usually welcome, and have a great time!

If you think you might like a hire boat holiday, you will find this a useful source of information Canal Junction holidays index.

We hope to see you soon, give us a wave!
