Nearing The End Of The Shroppie.

Today was a short trip with just one lock at Wheaton Aston. Tom took the opportunity to fill diesel at Turner's Garage as we left our mooring en route to our planned break for lunch at Brewood, a lovely village between Stafford and Wolverhampton. We were soon there, and in fine weather. We had morning tea, a walk around the village, and then lunch before leaving.

Above is Brewood Market Square.

Above is Speedwell Castle, a grade 2 listed building built by William Rock, (d 1753), reputedly from winnings gained from a bet on a horse named Speedwell.

There are many old buildings of interest around the village, and below are the old smithy cottages...

Tonight we are at the last of the country moorings provided by the Shropshire Union Canal Society, at Bilbrook, arriving during a shower of torrential rain. Sunday may be a day of rest before joining the Staffs and Worcester Canal for the next stage of our cruise.
